The announcement of Real Star Upendras "UI" and Kiccha Sudeep's "Max," set to release within a five-day interval, initially raised concerns regarding a potential box office clash. Additionally, there were apprehensions due to films from other industries competing for a share of the Christmas and New Year market. However, as the competition from films in other languages diminished, both "UI" and "Max" experienced a successful first week at the box office, although their collections have since declined. With significant Sankranti releases scheduled to hit theaters this week, it is anticipated that "UI" and "Max" will conclude their theatrical runs.
As of January 6, trade analysts estimate that both UI and Max were generating revenues between 0.1 crore and 0.35 crore, a figure that is anticipated to decline further in the coming days as advance bookings for major Sankranti releases commence. The advance bookings for Ram Charan’s Gamechanger began on January 7, which has further affected the performance of both films. Reports indicate that Max and UI have achieved net collections in India ranging from Rs 35 crore to Rs 40 crore, despite both teams asserting that their box office performances have been successful.
On day four of its box office run, Kiccha Sudeep’s film is nearing a significant milestone, suggesting it may successfully navigate the weekend box office challenge.
Multiplex bookings for Gamechanger are expected to commence on January 8, and it will be interesting to observe how many screens and shows will remain available for UI and Max following this. The competition will intensify further with the addition of Daaku Maharaj, Sankranthigi Vasthunam, Madha Gaja Raja, Vanangaan, and Madraskaaran entering the fray.
In terms of box office performance, UI has achieved the highest opening weekend for a Kannada film in 2024.
In addition to this, the Kannada films Choo Mantar, Sanju Weds Geetha, and Nimma Vasthugalige Neeve Javaabdaararu have not yet disclosed their theatrical release schedules. Consequently, it appears improbable that UI or Max will significantly enhance the existing box office numbers. Indeed, reports indicate that both films are expected to transition to OTT platforms following a 30-day period, suggesting they may become available for streaming simultaneously, though on separate platforms.
