Turbo: Why was the Mammootty-starrer’s OTT release delayed?

The latest blockbuster from Malayalam cinema in the first half of 2024, Turbo, is getting ready for its digital release. Vysakh directed this film, which was written by Midhun Manuel Thomas. As previously mentioned, the movie is scheduled to stream on Sony LIV on August 9, which is significantly later than both Mammootty fans' and movie buffs' expectations.

Reasons for delay in Turbo’s OTT release

After being released in theatres on May 23, Turbo enjoyed an impressive run. The film saw a sharp drop in its earnings in Kerala over the course of the following few weeks despite having a fantastic start at the box office. However, based on current Malayalam industry trends, it was expected to have a much earlier digital debut, especially after 40 days of its theatrical run.

In addition to important sporting events like the Euro Cup and India vs Sri Lanka, Sony LIV's July schedule included several other significant Malayalam releases, including Malayalee From India. It is reasonable to assume that the streaming service's strategy was to only release one Malayalam title each month.

The action drama's Arabic version debuted on big screens throughout the Gulf last week, which may have also contributed to the OTT release's delay. It had a theatrical release in the GCC on August 2, according to the film's makers.

Turbo, a highly anticipated release on Sony LIV

The movie is anticipated to be available for streaming in five languages—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada—on Sony LIV. This is Mammootty's second project to be acquired by the well-known streaming service, after the release of his acclaimed horror thriller Bramayugam in February. They may have also paid a hefty sum for the digital rights to this film, given the buzz surrounding it.

The protagonist of the action drama is Turbo Jose, who is compelled to travel to Chennai after providing a favour that almost ends a young couple's relationship. In Chennai, he gets caught up in a bigger conspiracy involving the police, underworld organisations, and business moguls.
