Tovino Thomas on Mohanlal: The True Greatness of a Legendary Actor
3 days ago | 5 Views
When Lucifer came out in 2019, Tovino Thomas was part of its impressive ensemble cast, playing a small but crucial role. He portrayed Jatin Ramdas, the son of ex-chief minister PK Ramdas (Sachin Khedekar), a hesitant politician who returns to his roots after being urged by his "brother." This character even had a memorable line about knowing how to wear a mundu (dhoti), speak Malayalam, and throw in a few expletives for good measure.
He’s back to play the character again and assures fans there will be fresh lines to enjoy. There’s buzz that Jatin’s character might have a more complex, grey arc this time, although he hasn’t confirmed it. It’s still uncertain how much more screen time he’ll have in the sequel, especially with 40-50 characters in the mix, but he will be sharing the screen with Mohanlal this time.
This marks just the second occasion in Tovino’s career where he’s appeared alongside Mohanlal, the first being in 2014’s Koothara. At the recent promotional event for Empuraan, the second part of the Lucifer trilogy, held in Kochi, Tovino reflected on his experience working with the Malayalam legend in Koothara. Now, 11 years later, they’ll be seen together again.
“Tovino shared, ‘Lalettan has been a part of the industry for 47 years. He’s incredibly loved and respected, enjoying a lot of privileges on set due to his star power. Yet, he still shows this child-like enthusiasm and passion for making great cinema, which really inspires me. For example, during one of my close-up shots, where he didn’t need to be present, the plan was to place a paper next to the lens for me to focus on while delivering my line.’”
He explained that even though the co-actor didn't need to be in the shot at that moment, Mohanlal asked if he should position himself opposite Tovino and then moved to stand right by the spot designated for him. “In the scene where I was speaking to Lalettan, he didn’t have to be present for that take, but I was able to perform while looking at his face, which I think really improved my performance. That’s the amazing thing about an actor like Mohanlal; he helps his co-stars shine,” Tovino shared.
