There is so much to look forward to in 2025, and one of the most anticipated projects in the Hollywood pipeline is, of course, the Suicide Squad equivalent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts*. That asterisk, of course, has us all curious about what it means, and comic nerds have already decoded it as the gateway for the Thunderbolts to enter Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While the recently released teaser introduced a more grounded, action-oriented, Tom Cruise-esque vibe that the MCU has lacked for some time, we’re told this group of misfits will have a wild time fighting the world because there is so much to explore with them. It turns out that a new special look has now been revealed by the studio, and it’s a totally badass clip.
For those unfamiliar, directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is set to release on May 2, 2025, and is one of the most anticipated movies, as it has been in the making for ages. The film is about antiheroes recruited by the government for a task that’s essentially a suicide mission. Whether they make it out alive and who they become is the story. But wait—is Lewis Pullman’s Bob really the Sentry? Read on to find out what you should know about this.
Thunderbolts* Special Look Revealed
The special look was shared at the first-ever D23 Brazil fan event, where Kevin Feige took the stage and revealed a four-minute-long footage from Thunderbolts*. This footage is special because it introduces each character with their purpose in the story, confirming a lot. First, it confirms that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine now actually resides in Avengers Tower, shutting down rumors that it’s the base for Mephisto or the Fantastic Four.
The preview opens with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky leading the team, and the visuals are stunning. It then focuses on each member, showing what they’ll bring to the team’s dynamics. As we go over the team, Lewis Pullman’s Bob enters, giving us a closer look. However, he is still not revealed as Sentry, suggesting the makers may be saving that for a reveal closer to the film's release.
Meanwhile, Red Guardian, played by David Harbour, is the only person who calls the team "Thunderbolts*" and none of the other members are happy about it. However, if the comics are anything to go by, the asterisk will eventually make them the Dark Avengers. This could pave their way into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Check out the preview here.
About Thunderbolts*
The official synopsis for the film reads: "Thunderbolts* is about an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU's least anticipated band of misfits." The film also brings back Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), in addition to some exciting new faces.
Thunderbolts* is set to hit the big screen on May 2, 2025.
