Tharun Moorthy, a Malayalam filmmaker, has directed just three films so far, with his latest project, Thudarum, featuring Mohanlal, set to hit theaters on April 25, 2025. Tharun kicked off his career with Operation Java, a crime thriller inspired by actual cases from the police cyber cell. He then released Saudi Vellakka in December 2022, which earned a National Award for Best Malayalam feature film.

Thudarum arrives nearly two and a half years later and wasn't originally intended to be Tharun's third film. He was approached by the legendary Malayalam actor Mammootty to discuss a potential collaboration. In a chat with Kaumudy Movies, Tharun mentioned that he had an idea in mind but realized that Mammootty was in a phase of experimenting with different films and roles, honing his craft to perfection. Eventually, Tharun felt that the concept he had for Mammootty wasn't compelling enough, and he communicated that to the actor.

Shortly after, Tharun was invited to direct a story that Mohanlal found intriguing. Upon hearing the plot, Tharun felt it would showcase a side of Mohanlal that he, as an audience member, would be excited to see. This led him to join the project and develop the screenplay for Thudarum, which he describes as a family drama. This film marks Mohanlal's second release of the year, following L2: Empuraan, the sequel to Lucifer.

Tharun expresses his desire to eventually work on a film featuring Mammootty. He shares, “Mohanlal and Mammootty are true legends, and for someone like me, directing them would be a huge achievement. I genuinely hope to create a film with Mammootty, but I need a storyline that excites me as much as Thudarum does. I've talked to various people, including writers, to help find a project that I can collaborate on with Mammootty.”
