The White Lotus Season 3 Faces Indian Censorship — And It’s Not What You Think

HBO's The White Lotus is well-known for its provocative content, so it comes as no surprise that certain scenes have generated significant discussion, particularly the incestuous sequence. Interestingly, in India, a relatively mild scene was removed from the streaming service JioHotstar, while a more controversial threesome scene remained unedited.
The White Lotus gets censored in India
The scene that was edited does not relate to the show's already controversial incest plot, which has faced backlash in various countries. Instead, it was the opening scene that was omitted. It is believed that this decision was made due to the use of profanity aimed at a religious figure.
In the Season 3 opening, Nicholas Duvernay’s character directs vulgarities at a Buddha statue, a choice made by the creators to illustrate the character’s cultural insensitivity during a vacation in Thailand.
“What the f**k! I said, don’t let anything happen to my mother, motherf---er,” he exclaims.
This scene has been censored in India. In the version available on JioHotstar, Zion is depicted praying at the Buddha statue, but all instances of profanity have been completely removed. According to IndieWire, the streaming service made this edit without authorization from HBO or any governmental directive.
