Ananth Mahadevan's film The Storyteller, featuring Paresh Rawal and Adil Hussain, draws inspiration from the renowned short story "Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro" by Satyajit Ray. While certain scenes diverge from the original narrative, the film has been commended for its unique interpretation. The plot centres around a storyteller and a wealthy businessman. The storyteller, who is reluctant to share his tales with magazines, encounters the businessman, who seeks 'unique' short stories to alleviate his insomnia. Eventually, the storyteller discovers that the businessman has appropriated his stories and published them without his consent. This raises questions about the future of their friendship. Will the storyteller, Tarini, seek retribution against the businessman, Garodia?

The Storyteller ending melts hearts due to its rich direction

Tarini Bandyopadhyay (Paresh Rawal) is disinclined to share his narratives with magazines, nor does he find joy in travelling abroad to visit his son or remaining in a single occupation. Throughout his life, he has held a total of 73 different jobs. His passion for storytelling has always been evident, and one day he stumbled upon a job advertisement in the newspaper seeking a storyteller. This led him to Ahmedabad, where he became a personal storyteller for businessman Ratan Garodia (Adil Hussain), who suffers from chronic insomnia.

Shortly thereafter, Ratan discovered that Tarini was not interested in publishing his 'unique' tales, prompting him to take matters into his own hands. Without Tarini's knowledge, Ratan published his stories, quickly gaining significant acclaim. Tarini's realization came when he visited a library and found a magazine featuring his stories under the pseudonym Gorkha. It became clear to him that Ratan was behind this. Despite this revelation, Tarini chose to continue his role as a storyteller in Garodia's household.

The narrative reaches its peak at a story release event for Ratan Garodia, where he was summoned to meet representatives from the Rabindranath Tagore Foundation. They revealed to him that he had been plagiarizing Tagore's works and presenting them as his own, resulting in copyright violations and a substantial fine of Rs. 10 lakh. Subsequently, the scene depicted Tarini explaining to his family how he had deceived Ratan by sharing Tagore's stories, knowing that Ratan possessed limited literary knowledge. Consequently, Ratan mistakenly believed that the works of Tagore were originally Tarini's.

In the concluding scene, Tarini is seen taking up the pen, a gift from his late wife, and beginning to compose his own narrative about his encounter with Ratan. Simultaneously, Ratan embarks on writing the story of Tarini. The final moments poignantly illustrated the lead characters as they embarked on a journey of self-discovery.

The Storyteller cast

In addition to Paresh Rawal and Adil Hussain, the cast of the film includes Anindita Bose, Rohit Mukherjee, Revathy, and Tannishtha Chatterjee, among others. The production team comprises Jyoti Deshpande, Salil Chaturvedi, Suchhanda Chatterjee, and Shubha Shetty. The Storyteller is supported by Jio Studios, Purpose Entertainment, and Quest Films. Hriju Roy is responsible for the film's musical score.
