The 2023 supernatural horror film The Pope's Exorcist has made its way to one more OTT platform. After being available to stream on Netflix, the Russell Crowe-led film has dropped on SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium). You can also rent The Pope's Exorcist on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) for Rs. 99. Julius Avery helmed the film, which is based on the books An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992) by Father Gabriele Amorth. Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the screenplay. Russell Crowe plays the lead role of Amorth, while Franco Nero, Alex Essoe, and Daniel Zovatto round out the cast.

The Pope's Exorcist plot and source material

Based on Father Gabriele Amorth's real files as the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican, The Pope's Exorcist follows Amorth as he examines a terrible possession involving a young kid and ultimately reveals a plot that the Vatican has fervently sought to conceal for generations.

Along his journey to an ancient Spanish convent, a mother from the US, Julia Vasquez (Essoe), her daughter Amy (Laurel Marsden), and her son Henry (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney), encounter a plethora of intriguing individuals in The Pope's Exorcist. They unwittingly summon Asmodeus, an ancient demon who possesses Peter. The exorcism brings to light both Amorth's personal shortcomings and the horrific past of the Catholic Church.

Tone and style

The Pope's Exorcist is a terrifying, hilarious, violent, and inquisitive take on a classic tale, brought to life with a lot of flair thanks to Crowe's outstanding portrayal as the titular character. The historical elements utilised in The Pope's Exorcist, which centres on the Spanish Inquisition, lend credence to the story's authenticity.

With a production budget of around $18 million, The Pope's Exorcist surprised critics and audiences alike by earning over $77 million. When it finally debuted on Netflix a few months later, the 2023 film continued its triumph, spending nine days at the top of the streaming service's movie charts.

The announcement that production was underway on a sequel came in April 2023. There are rumours that Crowe will return for a second stint.
