Robert Redford on Retiring After The Old Man & the Gun
Robert Redford, who portrayed Forrest in the film, announced it as his swan song ahead of its release. At 82, Redford expressed his desire to retire in style, and this film provided the perfect opportunity. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about why he chose this project, Redford shared, “Over time of working, I’ve boiled it down to three steps. The most important thing is story. And then: Who are the characters that embody that story? And then: Where is the emotion? It has to have all three of those steps.”
He added that The Old Man & the Gun had that vibe: “Why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?” Redford also noted that playing Forrest Tucker “appealed to my own sensibility, which has a slightly outlaw side to it… if I look back at my own life, I was always struggling against bounds that tie you down.”
Although The Old Man & the Gun marked his final leading role, Redford made a brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame in 2019 after the film's 2018 release.
