The most significant box office failure of 2025 will be available for streaming less than three weeks after its theatrical debut. Remarkably, the film received critical acclaim yet failed to resonate with viewers.
The biggest box office bomb of 2025
By the following week, Bong Joon Ho's science fiction thriller, Mickey 17, will be available for streaming on all major platforms globally. This news may surprise many, as the film just premiered in theaters last week. However, its underwhelming box office performance has compelled Warner Bros Discovery, the studio financing the project, to expedite its streaming release in an effort to mitigate financial losses.
Mickey 17 digital release
On Sunday, When To Stream announced that "Mickey 17" is scheduled for digital streaming through premium video on demand starting March 25. Consequently, the film featuring Robert Pattinson will be accessible on prominent platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home for a price of $24.99. Considering that the film was released in theaters only on March 7, this transition to over-the-top (OTT) services occurs quite early, suggesting a lack of confidence from the studio in the film's box office potential. The timeline for the film's streaming release in India remains uncertain. Additionally, Warner Bros has yet to officially confirm the film's early digital release.
How Mickey 17 cost Warner Bros $100 million
Mickey 17 was produced with a budget of $118 million, and an additional $80 million was allocated for marketing and promotional efforts. Industry experts suggest that the total expenditure of $198 million indicates the film must generate over $300 million in revenue to achieve profitability. However, after nine days of release, Mickey 17 has only garnered $90.5 million globally, with its daily earnings declining to low single-digit figures. It is projected that the film may barely exceed $100 million but is unlikely to surpass that threshold. According to sources cited by World of Reel, the film is expected to result in a loss exceeding $100 million for Warner Bros, positioning it as the most financially unsuccessful film of 2025 thus far.
This comes despite a generally positive reception from critics. Mickey 17 holds a commendable approval rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.2 out of 10. On Metacritic, it has achieved a solid score of 72 out of 100, with numerous critics awarding it 4 out of 5 stars.
Based on Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7, Mickey 17 features a cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
