Creators of the acclaimed Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers have successfully concluded filming for the fifth season and are likely in the final stages of post-production. It is now appropriate to unveil their next venture with Netflix, which is set within the same universe as Stranger Things. During the event, they provided insights into the new series, indicating that it shares a significant thematic connection with the original show featuring Millie Bobby Brown.

In discussing The Boroughs, Matt Duffer remarked, “The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil. However, unlike Stranger Things, it is set in a retirement community, which offers a fresh perspective. This time, our misfits are somewhat older; they navigate in golf carts rather than on bicycles. The cast includes renowned actors such as Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, and many other celebrated figures we admire,” Duffer continued. “We have viewed the first three episodes and are genuinely excited about it. It is entertaining, thrilling, and emotionally resonant, and we eagerly anticipate sharing it with you.”

According to the synopsis, The Boroughs is set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community located in the New Mexico desert, where a group of unexpected heroes must unite to confront an otherworldly menace intent on seizing the one resource they lack: time.

This eight-episode sci-fi/supernatural drama features a talented cast, including Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as Sam, Geena Davis (Beetlejuice) as Renee, Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage) as Judy, Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story) as Wally, Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) as Lilly, Clarke Peters (The Wire) as Art, and Bill Pullman (Independence Day) as Jack.

Although a specific release date has not been announced, The Boroughs is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2026. This timeline aligns with the anticipated late 2025 release of Stranger Things Season 5.
