When Matt Reeves shaped The Batman, he knew he was giving the world an iteration of a much-loved superhero that was different. It wasn't a generic Bruce Wayne origin story but something distinct. Something that created a path for The Batman Epic Crime Saga to flourish. So it’s given that when the movie was being shaped and word was around that Reeves was casting for the DCEU, actors flocked to get a piece of the pie that already looked enticing from the script itself. After many rumors and auditions, Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame was announced as the new Batman and the one who would take The Batman Epic Crime Saga forward. But did you know even Nicholas Hoult was in the running and faced a very brutal experience because of it?
Nicholas Hoult Auditioned for The Batman
Nicholas Hoult, who will be making his DCU debut as Lex Luthor in Superman, actually auditioned to play Bruce Wayne in The Batman. He remembers how the experience was brutally personal, considering that Robert Pattinson, a fan favorite to play the Caped Crusader, was announced as the lead by fans a week before Nicholas had even auditioned. Read on to know everything you need about it.
As he recalled on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Hoult said, “I remember a week before we did the Batman test, I was driving in my car, and I had the radio on. They were talking about how Rob was going to be the new Batman, and I thought, ‘It’s not confirmed yet! I’m auditioning next weekend. Give me a chance.'”
Hoult then explained how it was an emotional blow. “Yeah, of course, it’s an emotional blow. On a practical level, I knew I was auditioning against Rob. And Rob is fantastic in that movie—it was the right decision. But you get excited by the prospect. Matt [Reeves] is a fantastic director, and with the script and everything, I thought, ‘This is going to be a cool movie I want to be part of.’”
He added, “It’s a brilliant character. There’s a period before you reach acceptance and can see the movie, think, 'that was the right choice.' But before that, you go through, ‘What could I have done differently? Why not me?’ You run through all those things.” Meanwhile, Hoult will now be seen as the much-loved villain Lex Luthor in Superman.
