In the last few days, the word most frequently heard in Kerala is likely the title of Mohanlal’s new movie – Thudarum, which industry insiders are already predicting will join the Rs 100 Cr club within the next two weeks.
The actor’s performance has been acclaimed by both Mohanlal enthusiasts and moviegoers as one of his finest roles, with many stating that it truly lives up to his Complete Actor title and expressing gratitude to director Tharun Moorthy for reintroducing their ‘old Mohanlal’ to the screen. Interestingly, the director disclosed that the alternative title the team had contemplated for the film closely aligned with this feeling.

Mohanlal's Thudarum might as well have been called Vintage: Tharun Moorthy
In a recent discussion with Red FM Malayalam, Tharun, who had previously directed Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka, stated that this was the first occurrence of him starting to film a movie prior to finalizing its title. The film had commenced shooting under a provisional title of L360.
“(Writer) KR Sunil had a preliminary title. While filming, I conceived the idea of naming it Thudarum and I also talked about it with producer M Renjith ettan. It was a straightforward title similar to Oppam,” he mentioned.
The director then opted to deliberate on how to display the title and, as part of that process, informed the poster designers about creating it in a large and bold manner – resembling titles from vintage film posters, using comparable fonts. Once the designers had developed their font for the title, they showed it to Mohanlal, who offered his own recommendations.

But when the announcement was postponed, the team began to question whether Thudarum was the appropriate title. “At that point, there was also a movement among fans to reveal the title,” Tharun mentioned. “That coincided with the release of the Hema Committee report, which caused significant upheaval in the Malayalam film industry. Therefore, it truly wasn’t the suitable moment to unveil the title – Thudarum (which translates to ‘will continue’). With so many controversies unfolding, it simply didn’t feel like the correct time to announce a film with a title like this. Hence, we chose to hold off. ”
Tharun Moorthy prefers Thudarum because it's more straightforward
Then arrived the proposal – Vintage, clarifies Tharun. “I was uncertain if I wanted to select that because this wasn’t a film intended to resurrect ‘vintage Mohanlal’. So, if we had used that title and vintage Mohanlal didn’t show up, it would have repercussions,” he mentioned, adding that he was torn between choosing Vintage or Thudarum. The director stated that it was Mohanlal who had provided him with clarity. “Lalettan suggested to me, ‘Why opt for any title other than Thudarum? I found myself questioning why a film had not yet been made with that title because when you read a book or watch the news, you continuously see or hear that word. It’s straightforward, consists of few letters, and has a well-rounded font. ’ Once I received that encouragement from him, we made the decision to proceed with this. ”
Tharun further elaborated that the title suited the movie perfectly, “which narrates the different phases of a man’s existence and how life continues despite the challenges he faces. ” Thudarum, featuring Mohanlal in the role of a taxi driver, also includes Prakash Varma, Shobana, Binu Pappu, and Thomas Mathew in significant roles.
