Sony LIV is poised to unveil a lesser-known historical narrative through its forthcoming fictional series, The Waking of a Nation. This compelling show is crafted and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Ram Madhvani, a recipient of the National Award and an International Emmy nomination. The series will be available for streaming exclusively on Sony LIV starting from March 7th.

Set against the historical backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the story follows Kantilal Sahni, portrayed by Taaruk Raina, a lawyer ensnared in a web of colonial deception. As the Hunter Commission manipulates historical facts to benefit the ruling powers, Kantilal confronts issues of racism, historical erasure, and the quest for truth. United by a steadfast childhood bond, Kantilal and his friends—Sahil Mehta as Ali Allahbaksh, Bhawsheel Singh as Hari Singh Aulakh, and Nikita Dutta as Poonam, Hari’s wife—navigate their differing ideologies to uncover a conspiracy that alters their destinies. In a reality where justice seems elusive, will they succeed in revealing the concealed truths, or will they be overwhelmed by them?

Ram Madhvani, the creator and director of the show, expressed his long-standing fascination with colonialism and its associated issues of racism and prejudice. He stated, "The complexities of cultural, linguistic, social, and artistic colonization have always been a source of concern for me. As I considered my next project, I realized it needed to be anchored in our history, particularly during the British Raj and our fight for independence. This realization sparked the concept for The Waking of a Nation. With the support of Sony LIV, we have developed an engaging series that intertwines courtroom drama with the profound narrative of three friends and the evolution of India."

The series is produced by Ram Madhvani and Amita Madhvani under the Ram Madhvani Films banner and boasts an impressive cast, including Taaruk Raina, Nikita Dutta, Sahil Mehta, Bhawsheel Singh, Alex Reece, and Paul McEwan, among others. The writing team, consisting of Shantanu Srivastava, Shatrujeet Nath, and Ram Madhvani, has crafted a narrative that promises to deliver a captivating mix of historical intrigue, camaraderie, and the power dynamics that influenced this extensive investigation.
