Suseenthiran: Launching New Faces is Impossible Without Backing

Director Suseenthiran, who made his directorial debut in 2019 with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, returns with a new love story titled 2K Love Story. He expresses that this experience feels akin to making his first film once more. With the film set to premiere on Valentine’s Day (February 14), the director engages in a discussion with OTTplay.

When inquired about any doubts regarding the acceptance of his film and ideas by the younger generation, Suseenthiran responds, “I did not have such concerns, as I previously managed a more challenging script, Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer, quite effectively. In 2K Love Story, I aim to highlight the positive aspects of this generation, which I believe will resonate well. This narrative serves as a guide for how today’s parents should approach and comprehend their children.”

Director Suseenthiran Interview

The director of 2K Love Story observes that audience preferences evolve approximately every five years. "Every five years, a new demographic of viewers emerges, and it is essential for us to comprehend their perspectives. For instance, five years ago, a narrative might have centered around a boy and his romantic partner, whereas today, a woman can hold equal significance as a friend alongside a romantic interest. This trend remains consistent regardless of gender. It reflects a positive shift, yet contemporary parents often fail to grasp this change. We have depicted this evolution in our film."

The forthcoming film primarily targets a younger audience, which highlights a notable gap in Tamil cinema regarding the emergence of new talent. "Moving forward, it will be increasingly challenging for producers to consider scripts featuring young heroes due to the commercial aspects involved. A young actor must establish themselves to be recognized as a lead. For example, in this project, friends collaborated financially to bring the film to life. It is quite difficult to discover new talent based solely on merit. I have previously proposed initiatives that allow young individuals to demonstrate their abilities without any industry connections. I have consistently championed the cause of aspiring actors without a background, which is why I provided Vijay Sethupathi with an opportunity in Naan Mahaan Alla. Likewise, in 2K Love Story, I have introduced several emerging talents who can leverage this film as a launchpad for their careers."

‘2K Love Story is not a love story’

Suseenthiran expresses that he does not focus extensively on creating love stories, stating, “While love is essential for a society free from caste distinctions, we have also idealized and sanctified love to such an extent. Consequently, I have refrained from crafting love stories, and 2K Love Story should not be classified as a love story either,” he further remarks.

The director elaborates that the process of creating this film serves as a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the current generation, which has enhanced his understanding and empathy towards young people. "Cinema and society are interconnected. The concept of romance is fluid between these two aspects, as they continuously influence one another," the director states in conclusion.

2K Love Story is scheduled for release in theaters on February 14.
