Big things are happening this week for Superman fans! James Gunn's new take on the iconic hero, featuring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, just dropped its first poster. Plus, Gunn has announced that the film's first trailer will be released this Thursday. We’ll finally get to see Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor back in action after a long break. The movie is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and will show a more seasoned Clark Kent juggling his duties as Superman and his job at the Daily Planet in Metropolis.
A large ensemble and brave side characters.
Superman is set to have a huge lineup of heroes and supporting characters, like Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathigi), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio), Perry White (Wendell Pierce), and a bunch of others. Alongside Peter Safran in producing the film, Gunn is also the co-CEO of DC Studios and is directing it based on a script he wrote himself.
Last week, Josh Horowitz had James Gunn on his podcast, Happy, Sad, Confused, where Gunn hinted that moviegoers are in for a treat with a new side of Superman. He believes that the Silver Age sci-fi elements he's incorporating into the film are something fans haven't experienced before. This particular chapter of Superman's story is a first for audiences, and they'll get to check it out when the movie hits theaters.
James Gunn's take on Lex Luthor as Superman's top nemesis.
Gunn teased that the version of Lex Luthor in the film will be Superman's toughest opponent yet, and he mentioned that having Hoult in the role will make Lex feel like a true equal to Superman. The director added that audiences haven't really seen Nick portray Lex in this way before, and he's definitely got a strong presence. This might lead some to think, "Oh man, poor Superman." But that dynamic doesn't always come across on screen. Lex is incredibly smart and capable, which often makes comic readers think, "Oh, Superman's in trouble." They know Lex isn't the kind of guy you want on your team, but in the movies, it often feels like, "Lex is about to get taken down."
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025! Check out the first poster and don’t forget to circle Thursday on your calendars for the trailer drop.
