Superboys of Malegaon: A Unique Release Strategy
1 month ago | 5 Views
The streaming scene has really changed the game for filmmakers, giving them a chance to share their work in ways that go beyond just a couple of hours of storytelling. But as things start to get back to normal, it’s important for both theaters and streaming services to work together and support each other in this ever-changing and super competitive industry.
Amazon MGM Studios, along with Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment, is making a big move with their new project, Superboys of Malegaon. Why is this a big deal? Because this film, directed by Reema Kagti, will be the first Indian movie backed by Amazon to hit theaters before it streams online. Pretty cool, right?
So, how does this actually work?
Superboys of Malegaon is a collaborative effort from Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby, with Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti at the helm as producers. The script is penned by Varun Grover, featuring Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora in the main roles. The film narrates the uplifting journey of Nasir Sheikh and his crew, who created a thriving film industry right in the middle of Malegaon. Mark your calendars for its release on February 28, 2025!
This Friday, Superboys of Malegaon hits Indian theaters, and it's already sparking a lot of chatter. Amazon's clever strategy aims to create excitement around the film while putting it on the global stage. After its time in theaters, it will make its way to Prime Video, although we don't have a specific release date yet. Usually, films wait about 60 to 90 days after their theatrical run before streaming, but since Superboys of Malegaon is an Amazon Original, they might bend the rules a bit. This approach could also boost the film's earnings before it goes digital.
Zoya Akhtar talks about the Superboys of Malegaon
Superboys of Malegaon takes its inspiration from the well-known documentary Supermen of Malegaon. In an interview with Firstpost, Zoya Akhtar opened up about how it all came together:
“I watched the documentary and really enjoyed it. It dives into the process of making the film. A couple of years later, I was at a film festival in Delhi and spotted Nasir from across the room. He saw me too, so I went over, we struck up a conversation, and that’s how our friendship began.”
She also mentioned, "As time went on, we kept in contact. Every time he visited Bombay, he would give me a call, and we met up a few times. I found his journey really fascinating. He began telling me stories about his life, and I thought that Supermen of Malegaon was such a powerful tale that it could definitely be turned into a feature film. Superboys of Malegaon actually spans a decade of his life leading up to the making of Supermen."
