The festival encouraged fans to prepare for the return of this cherished classic. Ghatak will be presented on the big screen once more, allowing viewers to relive the experience in cinemas on March 21, 2025.

Legacy of Ghatak

The iconic action film Ghatak, featuring Sunny and released during Diwali in 1996, celebrated its 28th anniversary last year. Its captivating storyline, powerful performances, and memorable dialogue have ensured that it remains a beloved choice among audiences.

To mark this occasion, the actor shared a nostalgic video on Instagram, showcasing his favourite lines and scenes from the movie. He took a moment to honour the late, remarkable Amrish Puri, who played his father in the film. Puri's endearing character was a highlight of Ghatak.

In the video, Sunny captioned it "28 years of 'Ghatak'!" reflecting on his Diwali release from 1996. The actor expressed his fond memories of Amrish Puri.

Key cast and director

Danny Denzongpa and Meenakshi Seshadri played significant roles in the film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Upon its release in 1996, Ghatak achieved remarkable success, and Sunny Deol's impactful dialogues continue to resonate with audiences today.

The narrative centres around a ruthless gangster named Katya (Danny Denzongpa), who has seized control of a town near Mumbai, India. Kashi (Sunny Deol), who arrives in the town with his ill father seeking medical assistance, confronts Katya after the latter violently suppresses any attempts at rebellion, including the execution of a man who dared to oppose him. During the village uprising, Kashi confronts Katya, but he and his father are caught off guard by the ensuing chaos.

Box Office Achievement  

Ghatak emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of that year, amassing 32 crore at the domestic box office in India. It also ranked as the second-highest-grossing film of all time in terms of international revenue.

A dedicated fanbase emerged around the film's dialogue. The foundation of this film is rooted in the original Japanese classic, Seven Samurai (1954), as well as its American remake, The Magnificent Seven (1960). In his later film, China Gate (1998), which also achieved considerable success, Santoshi revisited the same narrative.
