Following the tremendous success of Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023), Sunny Deol is set to make his next appearance on the big screen in Jaat, which is scheduled for release in April, generating considerable excitement among fans. However, many may not be aware that the actor is also involved in a new project titled Safar, currently in the early stages of post-production. According to recent reports, filmmaker Shashank Udapurkar's family drama features Deol as a family man who, amidst life's difficulties, learns to appreciate every moment. This role marks a significant shift from his typical tough-guy persona. Given the delicate nature of the film's themes, it seems the producers are leaning towards an OTT release instead of a traditional theatrical debut.

According to Mid Day, the location shooting for the film Safar was completed in 2024. The cast includes Darshan Jariwala and Simran Bagga. In anticipation of a direct-to-OTT release, producer Vishal Rana is currently in talks with several streaming platforms. A source cited by the tabloid noted that audiences enjoy seeing Deol in grand roles where he confronts adversaries single-handedly and delivers impactful dialogues, especially following his involvement in numerous action films after the success of Gadar 2. However, Safar presents a different narrative. This film, which lacks action, focuses on Deol portraying a middle-aged family man who learns about the essence of life and the key to happiness through acts of kindness. Although he is uncertain about his fans' expectations, he was captivated by the story when Rana and Udapurkar approached him, leading him to agree to the project without hesitation.

The director, known for his work on Anna (2016) and Prawaas (2020) in Marathi cinema, aims to explore a different facet of Deol's acting identity with Safar. Given the current popularity of their leading actor, the producers are likely contemplating a theatrical release.

Shift to OTT release plans

The source indicates that the creators opted for an OTT release due to the film's intimate and emotional narrative centered around a family. They concluded that a digital platform would be more appropriate for addressing such themes. The team aims to deliver the content in June, anticipating a release by the end of the year.

In December 2023, a video surfaced showing Deol unsteadily navigating through Juhu, leading many to speculate that he was under the influence. Following expressions of concern from his fans, the actor utilized social media to clarify that he was merely engaged in filming and was not intoxicated. In truth, the footage was recorded for the upcoming project, Safar.
