Kristofer's journey during a pandemic
Touch is a captivating and romantic story that spans continents and decades, based on the popular Icelandic novel by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson. Following the death of his wife, the main character sets off on an emotional journey to find his first love, who disappeared fifty years ago, as he approaches the end of his life.
Kristofer realizes that an epidemic is on the horizon, so he sets off on a mission to find out what happened to his Japanese fiancée, who mysteriously disappeared from London 50 years ago.
"Touch" tells the story of Kristófer (Egill Ólafsson), a widower who, after getting some tough news about his health, decides to tackle one of life's greatest mysteries.
He hops on an Icelandair flight to London, even as the coronavirus pandemic starts to unfold, to search for his childhood love, Miko (Kōki). They met back in the late 1960s when he was a student working at a Japanese restaurant. Just when their romance was blossoming, Miko vanished without a trace.
Iceland's submission for the Oscars
At the 97th Academy Awards, Touch has been chosen as Iceland's submission for Best International Feature Film.
Touch weaves through different time periods. It starts as a tale of a man on a quest for closure and a chance romance between two young people in London, eventually unveiling a secret linked to the Hiroshima bombing during World War II. This concept felt even more foreign to Kormákur than Japan did to the author Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson, who had previously lived there.
In a previous chat with Variety about adapting the book, Baltasar mentioned how he was drawn to the novel his daughter gifted him for Christmas, despite her not sharing much about it. Once he started reading, he found himself engrossed in the story of an elderly man reflecting on his past, turning the pages at a leisurely pace.
