When The Stars Gossip episode 1 review

The inaugural episode of When The Stars Gossip features Lee Min-ho portraying Gong Ryong, who embarks on a space mission alongside Eve Kim, played by Gong Hyo-jin, and another astronaut. Professionally, he serves as an obstetrician at MZ Medical Center, earning the title of the 'birthing king' due to his expertise in delivering babies. The medical center invested 70 million won to secure his participation in the space endeavor. As the spacecraft G.O.-10 launches and ascends into space, Ryong experiences a sense of unease, prompting him to reflect on his past and contemplate the possibility of his own demise. This leads the narrative into a flashback sequence.

Gong Ryong's mother passed away shortly after his birth, leaving him to be raised by his three aunts. He excelled academically as a high school student, achieving a perfect score on the CSAT, yet ultimately found himself in a challenging position as a doctor at MZ Medical Center. His playful demeanor is endearing, while his serious and melancholic expressions reveal the depth of his character, showcasing why he is truly unique.

He encounters the daughter of the center's chairman, Choi Go-eun (Han Ji-eun), during a minor road accident. Shortly thereafter, Ryong discovers that Go-eun is injured and bleeding. He promptly takes her to the hospital, where it is revealed that she is suffering from an ectopic pregnancy, necessitating immediate surgery to save her life. Go-eun also conveys her animosity towards Kang Kang-su (Oh Jung-se). She requests that no one be informed about her surgery; however, her father, Chairman Choi Jae-ryong, learns of it and subsequently dismisses Gong Ryong from his position at the center. Following this incident, Ryong turns to alcohol due to his unemployment. Eventually, Go-eun encounters him again, leading to the development of a romantic relationship.

Lee Min-ho, portraying a space tourist, captures attention right from the inaugural episode. The narrative then depicts Eve's determined efforts to restore Gong Ryong's consciousness. Shortly thereafter, he regains awareness. During this process, Eve injures her toes, resulting in bleeding. Observing this, Ryong insists on performing a minor surgical procedure. Despite it being only the first episode, their chemistry begins to unfold. It will be intriguing to witness the challenges and triumphs they face in their relationship.

The episode suggests that Gong Ryong may embark on a covert mission to space, the details of which remain undisclosed. It is reported on a news channel that he will investigate human sperm activity to uncover genetic enigmas obscured by Earth's gravity, in partnership with researchers on the planet. The underlying purpose of this endeavor remains uncertain, and only time will reveal the answer.

The premiere episode has generated significant anticipation, and it will be intriguing to discover what Lee Min-ho's Gong Ryong and Gong Hyo-jin's Eve Kim have in store for viewers in the forthcoming episodes, particularly as they delve into the theme of romance aboard the spaceship.
