After months of speculation, Srijit Mukherji took to his social media to announce his upcoming film, Winkle Twinkle. It has been reported that the director wished to adapt Bratya Basu’s political drama for the big screen. On Monday, Srijit made the announcement. Firdausul Hasan’s Friend’s Communications will produce the film.
Srijit Mukherji to contemporise the drama
Srijit has contemporised the 2002 play and made it politically relevant in 2024-25. The original play portrays an intense drama and political conflict between an upright and ethical father and his son who does not blink an eyelid to compromise for his own benefit. The poster of the film shows two men sitting in front of a shattered bust of the Russian revolutionist and face of the left movement across the world, Vladimir Lenin. Along with the title of the film, there is a hammer sickle and star – the emblem of the Indian left moment. Evidently, the filmmaker will incorporate the current political state in his film.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, according to sources, Ritwick Chakraborty may play the character of the father. Meanwhile, talks are on with Parambrata Chatterjee who may play the character of the son.
Debesh Chattopadhyay's Winkle Twinkle a hit
In 2002, Debesh Chattopadhyay adapted Bratya’s political play on stage as a production by his theatre group, Sansriti. Debshankar Halder and Rajatava Dutta played the lead characters Sabyasachi Sen and his son, Indra. The play delves into the life of a political activist, Sabyasachi, who goes missing from police custody. After 26 years, he resurrects like Rip Van Winkle and finds himself clueless in the changed world. He meets his son Indra who stands on a diametrically opposite political spectrum. The play was an instant hit with hundreds of shows taking place across Bengal.
