Netflix's worldwide sensation, Squid Game, has made its much-anticipated return with Season 2, which is already setting new records. Following the extraordinary success of Season 1, the most-watched series in Netflix's history, Season 2 has reached a remarkable achievement.

It has become the first series in Netflix's history to launch at the top position in all 93 countries where the service is offered, further establishing its status as a genuine global phenomenon.

New record

According to Forbes, Season 2 has achieved the distinction of being the first series to launch at number one in all 93 countries where Netflix operates, encompassing regions from the United States to Cyprus, Honduras, Kenya, Oman, and Thailand.

In terms of viewership, Squid Game Season 1 amassed 265.2 million views on the platform, translating to approximately 2.2 billion hours of content consumed. It holds the position of the most popular show on Netflix, not only among non-English titles but across the entire platform.

As of now, Netflix has not disclosed the viewership figures for Season 2. It remains uncertain whether Squid Game Season 2 will surpass the 2.2 billion hours viewed by its predecessor.

Nonetheless, Season 2 has not garnered the same level of acclaim as Season 1, currently holding a 63 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, in contrast to the 83 per cent score achieved by Season 1.

About the show

The most recent season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller, Squid Game, was released on Netflix this Christmas. Created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series centres on a clandestine competition where participants, grappling with financial difficulties, engage in a series of lethal children's games for a chance to win substantial monetary rewards. The inaugural season achieved remarkable success, becoming Netflix's most-watched series in 2021. A third and concluding season is anticipated to premiere in 2025.

The second season introduces additional characters, thereby expanding the narrative with more intricate backstories. It primarily centres on Seong Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, and features performances by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, and Choi Seung-hyun.
