Squid Game Creator Defends T.O.P.'s Casting Amid Controversy Over Past Scandal

The buzz around Squid Game Season 2 is off the charts, with tons of viewers tuning in from all over. Fans are diving deep into every little detail of the show, even catching a mistake where a cameraman pops up in a scene. While the chatter about the series is lively and entertaining, there's also some drama brewing involving Choi Seung-hyun, who plays Thanos. His casting has stirred up some backlash, and now the show's creator has finally weighed in on the issue.
The creator of Squid Game talks about why they chose Choi Seung-hyun for the cast
Choi Seung-hyun, who used to go by T.O.P. as part of the pop group BIGBANG, faced a tough time in the Korean entertainment scene after getting arrested for marijuana use back in 2017, which is a big no-no in South Korea. He was convicted that same year and ended up with a ten-month jail sentence, along with a two-year break from his mandatory military service. This incident kept him away from the industry for several years, but he made a big return with Squid Game Season 2. The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, recently shared his thoughts on bringing Seung-hyun back into the spotlight.
Hwang mentioned, “As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago, got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea,” according to Comicbook. “And so, this is a comeback after quite a long hiatus, particularly because he portrays a character that’s a rapper and also someone who is on drugs.”
Hwang talked about Seung-hyun's involvement, saying, “It really took a lot of bravery for him to play a character that has some pretty negative traits similar to his own personality. I believe it required a lot of courage to accept that role. Even after being away for a while, I have to say, as a director, he did an amazing job, and I’m really pleased with how he brought the character to life.”
Fans Spot a Mistake in Squid Game Season 2
In Episode 7 of Season 2, there's a pretty noticeable blunder. In this episode, Gi-hun and some other players start a rebellion, grabbing guns from the guards and taking them out. During a heated shootout in the dormitory hall, eagle-eyed fans caught a slip-up. In one shot, you can see a cameraman with a handheld camera hanging out in the background.
This little mistake, which the Netflix Korea team overlooked, has blown up online, with people sharing it all over social media. It’s even being compared to that famous Game of Thrones moment when a Starbucks coffee cup accidentally made it into a scene.
