Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is ready to stream on a new OTT platform after more than a year on Netflix. Indeed, SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium) will launch the 2023 animated superhero film on October 1, 2024. The film based on the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales/Spider-Man serves as the second installment in the Spider-Verse series and follows Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). Both films take place within the same shared multiverse of alternate realities known as the "spider-verse." Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who also served as producers, wrote the film, while Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson directed it. In the film, Shameik Moore plays the role of Miles. Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Shea Whigham, Greta Lee, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershala Ali, and Oscar Isaac are among the other voice actors featured in the film.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse overview and plot summary

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is Miles Morales' return to the Spider-Verse franchise. After reconnecting with Gwen Stacy, Miles Morales sends Spider-Man, the amiable neighbourhood hero from Brooklyn, into the Multiverse. He meets a group of Spider-People whose mission is to protect the Multiverse itself. However, when the heroes disagree on how to deal with a new danger, Miles must reevaluate his definition of heroism in order to rescue the people he cares about the most.

Similar to its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was a commercial and critical smash upon its 2023 release. With a global box office total of over $690 million, it broke all previous records to become the third-highest-grossing movie of the year in the US, the highest-grossing Sony Pictures Animation movie, and the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2023. The American Film Institute recognised Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as one of the best films of 2023.

In addition to winning at the Critics' Choice, Annie, and Producers Guild of America awards, it received nominations for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Oscars.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final part of the trilogy, is now in production, and a spin-off feature called Spider-Woman is also in the works.

Character breakdown

Shameik Moore plays Miles Morales/Spider-Man, a young man who, following Kingpin's murder of Peter Parker on Earth-1610, assumed the identity of the webslinger. Hailee Steinfeld plays the dual roles of Gwen Stacy and Spider-Woman. In this version, Stacy is the hero of Earth-65, where she is on the run after killing Peter Parker—the Lizard in her reality—in an accident. Miles has feelings for her.

Jeff Morales, played by Brian Tyree Henry, is Miles' father, a police force captain and former officer. In the original film, the character's last name was Davis; in this sequel, it's Morales. Rio Morales, played by Lauren Vélez, is a nurse and Miles' mother. On Earth-42, Vélez portrays a different Rio.

Jake Johnson portrays an older Spider-Man from Earth-616B who served as Miles' tutor. A daughter, Mayday, was born to him and his wife, Mary Jane "MJ" Parker. Jason Schwartzman portrays Johnathon Ohnn, a supervillain who underwent a transformation from an Alchemax scientist after an accident. Interdimensional portals now cover his body, granting him the ability to move through space and multiple dimensions. At first, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller rejected producer Avi Arad's suggestion to use The Spot as the film's primary enemy. However, after discussing the possibilities of The Spot's powers, they changed their minds.
