The world of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man has a fandom that marches for and behind it to this day, and they are all ready to get it revived. Over the years, the trilogy has become a bible for the nerds who call it the closest to the comics. The second film, titled Spider-Man 2, is actually considered the best Spider-Man movie ever, and there is so much written about it and compared even today. While that is iconic, the third movie is not so highly praised. It was rather a dud in more than one aspect, and the critics were not on its side. The film, which was touted to enable a glorious future, ended up killing it for a while. But if there is one thing we remember from that film, it has to be the very famous Evil Peter dancing scene where Tobey dances in black attire.
The Spider-Man 3 Dance Story
In case you do not recall, Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3 was seen dancing in the most random and weird way in a very pivotal scene. The craziness of the character and his position at that moment was reflected pretty well in that key moment. There is so much chatter about it on the internet even today. Some hate it, some love it, many find it cringe, and some even embarrassing. But the fact is, none of us can ignore it. But what if we tell you that Sam Raimi had an even more intense idea to make it even weirder? Read on to know everything you should about the same.
Talking to the Huffington Post, Pomerhn Derricks, a former ballerina turned movie choreographer, spoke about choreographing the dance sequence for Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3. She recalled how Sam Raimi had an even wilder plan that made the present dance sequence look like a cakewalk. The catch is that it got scrapped because Tobey rejected the idea and declined to film that additional scene.
“Years later, when I got ‘Spider-Man 3’ with Tobey Maguire, I remember meeting with him and Sam Raimi, and Tobey did not want to dance. There was this whole breakdancing scene that turned him off. I was developing this number and bringing in all these head-spinners to be his body doubles, and Tobey was negative, negative, negative,” Pomerhn Derricks said.
She added, “So one day I went to his house, and I started showing him Fred Astaire stuff, and that’s what we ended up doing for ‘Spider-Man 3.’ But it was because of Heath. I told Tobey, ‘You doing it is not going to age you. You’re just going to make these classic moves fresh and hip and new.’ Watching Heath do that in the stands, that’s exactly what he did. In his youth and his fearlessness, he made them look so cool.”
Spider-Man 3 streams on SonyLIV in India, and you can watch the film with your OTTplay Premium subscription too.
