A little while ago, the trailer of a new animated musical adventure fantasy comedy called Spellbound dropped. Featuring voice talents like John Lithgow, Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem, Nicole Kidman, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane and Tituss Burgess, Spellbound has been directed by Vicky Jenson, whose earlier credits include co-directing Shrek and Shark Tale.
What is Spellbound about?
The film follows a young princess’ quest to ward off the evil dark magic looming over her kingdom, and a spell that turned her parents into monsters. Zegler is Princess Ellian, who is on a tight deadline, failing which her parents will remain monsters forever and her kingdom engulfed by dark magic. Kidman and Bardem voice the parents in the film, which also features music by award-winning composer Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, who worked on Tangled earlier.
Spellbound coming to Netflix
Spellbound was initially meant to be an Apple TV+ original, with the streamer acquiring the rights way back in 2020. However, a year ago, Netflix took over the rights and has now set a release date for the film. Spellbound will begin streaming on the platform from November 22. It will drop at 1.30 pm.
In a Netflix note about the film, Zegler said that playing Princess Ellian was perfect for the child in her. “Taking on this job was so cool for my inner child. I was obsessed with animated films as a child, including Beauty and the Beast, which had such a gorgeous, sweeping score by Alan Menken, who did the music for our film. Films like these made me fall in love with musical theatre, which ended up changing my life,” she said.
Director Jenson has been quoted as saying that Zegler was just perfect as Ellian, with her “charismatic personality” that’s very real and fresh. She added that the actress being a fantastic singer was an added bonus. Spellbound has been written by Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda and produced by John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bruce Anderson for Skydance Animation.
