The Russell Crowe-led murder mystery Sleeping Dogs, which released in theatres in April this year, is headed to OTT. It had been reported that the film was headed to Lionsgate Play, but there was no date announcement then. Now we know that the film, directed by debutant Adam Cooper and based on the novel The Book of Mirrors, will begin streaming on August 2, 2024.

Crowe plays a retired homicide detective, Roy Freeman, battling Alzheimer’s, who is asked to look into an old case that he and his then partner had handled – the murder of a doctor. On death row, the perpetrator claims that his confession was coerced and that the real murderer is still out and about.

Roy’s re-investigation, though, leads to new bodies. With his fading memory and effects of an experimental treatment regimen, can Roy get to the bottom of this mystery in time, before an innocent man is sent to the gallows?

When the film released in theatres, the response to it was tepid, with some praise coming in for Crowe, but not so much for the movie. Also on the cast of Sleeping Dogs are Karen Gillan, Marton Csokas, Tommy Flanagan, Harry Greenwood, Thomas M Wright, Elizabeth Blackmore, Lynn Gilmartin, Pacharo Mzembe and Paula Arundell.

Speaking during the theatrical release of Sleeping Dogs, director Cooper had been vocal about his excitement in being able to direct an actor of the calibre of Crowe in his directorial debut. The filmmaker said that “every take was literally a gift”, so his experience on the set was no less than incredible.

Sleeping Dogs is the latest addition to Lionsgate Play’s impressive library. Some of the new titles that dropped recently include Arcadian, Logan Lucky, Arthur The King, The Iron Claw, Line of Duty, Wanted Man, The Beekeeper, Dream Scenario, among others.
