Renowned actress and musician Shruti Haasan is poised to make her international debut as a leading lady in the highly anticipated British psychological thriller "The Eye." Directed by Daphne Schmon, this film is set to premiere in India on February 27th as the opening feature of the 5th Wench Film Festival in Mumbai. The Wench Film Festival is recognized as one of India's premier film festivals, specializing in horror, science fiction, and fantasy genres.
"The Eye" delves into the gripping narrative of Diana (played by Shruti Haasan), who journeys to a secluded island where her husband Felix (Mark Rowley) tragically lost his life. In her quest for solace through the scattering of his ashes, her grief evolves into intrigue upon discovering the mysterious ‘Evil Eye’ ritual—an ancient practice that holds the potential to bring Felix back but demands a dark and unsettling sacrifice.
Shot on location in Athens and Corfu, the film beautifully showcases the haunting landscapes of Greece, enhancing its chilling and suspenseful tone. Following its premiere at the London Independent Film Festival in 2023 and its presentation at the Greek International Film Festival, "The Eye" continues to engage audiences around the globe.
On the occasion of the Indian premiere, Shruti Haasan expressed her long-standing fascination with the psychological thriller genre. She remarked, "Participating in a narrative that delves into human emotions, grief, and the supernatural is immensely thrilling. In addition to the film's captivating storyline and exceptional production quality, what makes this project particularly meaningful is its creation by an all-women-led production house, which resonates with my commitment to supporting women in the film industry. Moreover, this film advocates for sustainable filmmaking practices, an urgent necessity in today's world. To continue sharing our stories, we must do so in a way that is mindful of our environmental impact."
Director Daphne Schmon commented on the film, stating, "The Eye serves as both a tribute to Corfu, the island of my family's origin and an investigation into the dark psychological aspects of grief. The narrative required an actor capable of conveying its emotional intricacies, and Shruti Haasan was the ideal choice. Her skill in portraying Diana’s grief, paranoia, and resilience with such authenticity is truly impressive. Only an artist of Shruti’s calibre could bring this role to life, and she has delivered a remarkable performance that will resonate with audiences."
The Eye stands out as a distinctive film led by a female creative and production team. It is also the first film produced in Greece with an emphasis on sustainability.
The cast includes Mark Rowley, Linda Marlowe, Anna Savva, Christos Stergioglou, and Elpida Stathatouin in significant roles. The screenplay is penned by Emily Carlton, and the film is produced by Melanie Dicks. The Eye is set to have its theatrical release later this year.
