Season 2 of Showtrial is all set for its OTT debut in India. Created by Ben Richards, this British courtroom drama will be available on Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium) starting December 13, 2024. The first season starred Tracy Ifeachor and Céline Buckens and aired five episodes on BBC One back in 2020. After a couple of years, it was announced that Showtrial would be reimagined as an anthology series, bringing in a fresh cast for the second season. This new season aired from October to November 2024 and featured actors like Michael Socha, Nathalie Armin, and Adeel Akhtar.

Season 1 summary.

In the first season, we see the arrest of Talitha Campbell, the spoiled daughter of wealthy businessman Sir Damian Campbell, right after fellow student Hannah Ellis, who is the hardworking daughter of a single mom, goes missing. Showtrial alternates between the views of the prosecution and defense as they navigate the complexities of Talitha's case. Is she an innocent victim of circumstance or a cold-blooded murderer? Meanwhile, Hannah's plight adds another layer to the unfolding drama.

Season 2 storyline highlights

In the second season, Marcus Calderwood, a well-known environmentalist, realizes in his last moments that the person who attacked him is actually a police officer, after a vicious hit-and-run leaves him fighting for his life. The show features a cast of characters like the arrogant cop Justin Mitchell, the anxious defense attorney Sam Malik, and the no-nonsense prosecutor Leila Hassoun-Kenny.

The first season got mixed reviews. Critics slammed it for being too fast-paced, lacking depth, and having subpar writing. On the flip side, they did appreciate the show's structure, the emotional scenes, and Buckens' standout performance. Buckens not only snagged the International Emmy for Best Actress and the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress but also received several other nominations for her role as Talitha Campbell.

Ben Richards discusses how Showtrial has evolved over time.

Ben Richards, the writer and creator, shared his appreciation for the BBC, saying he's excited to dive into another gripping trial. He hopes this new chapter matches the captivating quality of the first one. He feels it's a privilege to have such a talented cast for Showtrial and loves working on the script.
