Shonda Rhimes, known for her engaging depiction of a fictional White House in Scandal, is back with a fresh project that promises an exciting twist. Teaming up with Scandal writer and producer Paul William Davies, Rhimes’ Shondaland is ready to present a captivating new drama that merges political intrigue with a murder mystery.
The Residence, now available on Netflix, invites viewers into the White House for what could be the most lethal and “tragic state supper” ever.
The Teaser: A Tense Mystery Unfolds
The trailer sets the stage for a gripping mystery that takes place in the iconic halls of the White House. A killer is on the loose, and it’s up to Cordelia Cupp, the top investigator in the world, to uncover their identity.
But as the teaser hints, her quest won’t be easy. She’ll have to navigate through political strife, escalating deceit, and deep-seated grudges that could jeopardize the whole investigation, as noted by Netflix.
What’s The Residence all about?
Set against the backdrop of the intriguing and often secretive environment of the White House staff, The Residence centers on a captivating murder mystery. The plot unfolds in various locations within the White House, including the upstairs, basement, and behind-the-scenes areas, as Detective Cordelia Cupp teams up with FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (played by Randall Park) to crack the case.
According to the teaser, the victim is A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), the White House Chief Usher. As the investigation progresses, every staff member becomes a suspect, leading to unexpected twists and startling discoveries.
With political intrigue and rising tensions, the story adds layers to an already dangerous puzzle, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
A Star-Studded Lineup
The Residence is currently available on Netflix and features a stellar cast. Uzo Aduba takes on the role of the eccentric yet brilliant detective Cordelia Cupp, while Randall Park plays Special Agent Edwin Park, who is brought in to support Cordelia, even though she prefers to go solo.
The lineup also includes Bronson Pinchot, Jason Lee, Jane Curtin, Ken Marino, and Giancarlo Esposito.
In a Netflix interview, Aduba shared her enthusiasm for being part of the project, saying, “We have an incredible group of phenomenally talented, genuinely good people who are generous, thoughtful, fun, and just awesome… Every day with our cast was a blast. We looked forward to coming to work each day.”
Is The Residence Inspired by Real Life?
While The Residence isn't a true story, it takes cues from Kate Andersen’s book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.
This book, filled with numerous interviews from White House staff, vividly illustrates the behind-the-scenes life of butlers, maids, chefs, and other team members who keep the presidential home running smoothly. These dedicated workers handle everything from hosting state dinners to looking after the first family’s kids, providing a close-up view of what life is like in the White House.
The Residence gives a unique look at this famous building, allowing viewers to see a side of the White House that’s usually off-limits to the public. The show poses the intriguing question: “Who really runs the house?” And the answer might surprise many.
Ultimately, Davies hopes that audiences enjoy the journey alongside Cordelia and Edwin as they delve into the hidden secrets lurking in the White House's hallways.
