Shivamma: OTT Premiere Date and Viewing Options for the Rishab Shetty-Produced Film Festival Favorite
12 days ago | 5 Views
Actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty has frequently expressed his concerns regarding the challenges of reaching audiences with the films he produces. The creator of Kantara has supported independent filmmakers such as Natesh Hegde, known for Pedro and Vagachipani, and Jaishankar Aryar, who directed Shivamma. Although both Pedro and Shivamma received acclaim at film festivals, they faced difficulties securing deals with OTT platforms. These platforms require a theatrical release before considering whether to acquire the films. As a result, Shivamma was released in theaters in June of last year, while Pedro has yet to have its theatrical debut.
Shivamma heads to OTT
Shivamma received outstanding reviews during its festival circuit and subsequent theatrical release; however, its box office performance was modest, primarily due to its classification as a festival film. It has now secured a digital streaming partner, with Sun Network acquiring the rights. The film will be accessible on Sun NXT starting April 4, 2025. This information was officially announced on April 3.
Starring Sharanamma Chetti as the title character, the film follows her, a mid-day meal cook at a rural government school, who attempts to make a quick buck by becoming a part of a pyramid scheme to sell health supplements. She puts in all her savings into this side hustle, only to realize that it may not exactly be her ticket to a rags-to-riches ending.
The film’s cast includes non-actors, like Sharanamma, namely, Chennamma Abbegere, Shivu Abbegere, Shruthi Kondenahalli, Chennappa Hansi and Shivanand Sadar, among others. Screened initially at the Busan International Film Festival, Shivamma won several accolades during its festival run.
Rishab, who is currently completing the Kantara prequel set to be released in theaters on October 2, 2025, as confirmed by Hombale Films, has transferred the production responsibilities of Vagachipani to Anurag Kashyap. This decision comes as he has been unable to dedicate the necessary time and effort for the film's promotion and release.
