Sharmila Tagore Announces Puratawn as Her Final Bengali Film Amid Health Concerns

Actor Sharmila Tagore has mentioned that Puratwan, her first Bengali film in 14 years, could potentially be her last. According to PTI, she expressed that her health challenges might make future projects difficult, although she has a deep affection for Bengali cinema.

When asked about her future in Bengali films, Sharmila shared, “I adore making Bengali films and everything about Kolkata, but my health isn’t as good as it needs to be for acting in shoots.”

Reflecting on her experience filming Puratwan in 2023, she noted that she spent about 14-15 days with the cast and crew at a resort by the Ganga River, where they had a wonderful time.

In a recent chat with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, Soha Ali Khan discussed her mother's health. She revealed, “My mother was one of the rare cases diagnosed with stage zero lung cancer, and she didn’t need chemotherapy. It was surgically removed, and thankfully, she’s doing well.”

Sharmila shares her experiences while filming for Puratwan

When discussing Puratwan, Sharmila expressed how great it felt to speak in Bengali in a film after more than ten years. She mentioned that she could easily improvise her lines, saying, "After all these years, I finally got to speak in Bengali, my native language, in a movie." The actress also noted that "every single film seems to present its own challenges."

Praising director Suman Ghosh for crafting such a lovely story, she remarked, "He really put in the effort to make me look great in every shot." Sharmila mentioned that her role as an elderly mother in Puratwan is one that doesn't come around often. In the film, she plays the mother of a corporate executive, portrayed by Rituparna Sengupta, who is a modern career woman.

Puratawn took home the Best Feature Film award at the Indian Film Festival of Houston and also won Best Film and Best Actress (Sharmila Tagore) at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival. Indraneil Sengupta stars as Rituparna’s husband in the movie.
