Shankar Calls ED's Property Attachment a 'Misuse of Legal Power' Amid Enthiran Plagiarism Claims

Earlier today, there were several reports stating that the Directorate of Enforcement has temporarily seized three properties worth Rs 10 crore that are registered under director Shankar's name. This move is linked to an ongoing legal dispute concerning copyright issues related to Shankar's film Enthiran.
Shankar reacts to the ED's action regarding his property
In case you didn't know, the Enforcement Directorate kicked off an investigation back in 2011 after a writer named Aarur Tamilnadan lodged a complaint with the 13th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore. He claimed that the movie Enthiran borrowed a bunch of elements from his story called Jiguba and filed his case under the Copyright Act of 1957.
One of the discoveries from the investigation revealed that Jiguba bore "striking similarities" to Enthiran. Reports also indicated that Shankar was paid Rs 11.5 crore for his work on Enthiran, which included story development, screenplay, dialogues, and direction. Following this, the ED placed three properties under Shankar’s name under attachment.
In light of this, Shankar released a statement claiming that the ED's actions were based on “groundless plagiarism accusations” concerning Enthiran. He mentioned, “So far, there hasn’t been any communication from the Enforcement Directorate about the attachment, yet it has been widely reported in the media. This move not only distorts the legal facts but also shows a blatant misuse of the legal system,” according to the director’s statement.
‘I'm really bummed out by the ongoing actions of ED’

Shankar expressed his disappointment over the ongoing actions of the ED, calling it “a blatant abuse of the legal process” given the facts laid out. He pointed out that the High Court had already ruled on the allegations.
“The Court thoroughly reviewed the evidence and arguments from both parties, ultimately rejecting the claim made by Aarur Tamil Nadan, who wanted to be recognized as the rightful copyright owner of the Enthiran story.”
Enthiran, which hit theaters in 2010, features Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the main roles. The film was a massive hit, with music composed by AR Rahman, and it can be streamed on SunNXT and the OTTplay Premium app.
