"Shōgun" Season 2: Hiroyuki Sanada Teases Casting and Story Details

1 month ago | 5 Views

Season 2 of the Emmy-winning FX show Shōgun might kick off filming as early as this fall, as revealed by star Hiroyuki Sanada. In a chat with Variety at AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards, he mentioned that they’re targeting autumn for production and that the writers' room is putting in a lot of effort right now. They’ll be bringing in some new faces while also welcoming back half of the original cast for the new season. He’s super excited since they’re currently assembling a top-notch crew for what’s coming next.

FX hasn't given the official green light for Shōgun Season 2 yet

FX hasn't given the green light for Shōgun Season 2 yet, but production is still rolling along. Rachel Kondo, the executive producer and creator, mentioned back in January that they were working on a new season, but she hasn't shared any details since then. Meanwhile, co-creator and executive producer Justin Marks pointed out that they're roughly six weeks away from wrapping up in the writers' room.

In October, Marks and FX signed a TV overall deal that could pave the way for more seasons of Shōgun, a series developed in collaboration with the estate of James Clavell. The first season follows English sailor John Blackthorne (played by Cosmo Jarvis) and the powerful daimyo Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). The story, inspired by Clavell's novel, sees Blackthorne shipwrecked in Japan while Toranaga deals with his political rivals..

Praise from critics and winning awards

Two more seasons have been greenlit thanks to the show's massive success. Shōgun snagged four awards at this year's Golden Globes, including Best Television Series—Drama, Best Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Actress for Anna Sawai, and Best Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano. Plus, it set a new record for the most Emmys won by a single season, racking up 18 awards!

Marks confirmed that the writers' room for Shōgun is buzzing with activity. Season 2 has wrapped up, and they're already gearing up for Season 3. In the first episode, he teased some exciting plot twists and promised some major surprises. With the ten episodes done and the finale aired, they can now start planning the next shoot. The team is super pumped about what’s coming. Marks especially wants viewers to remember how he plans to deliver some jaw-dropping moments right from the start of Part 2's second season, which will set the stage for future storylines..

Going beyond what James Clavell wrote in his book

It's hard to say how the upcoming episodes will expand the plot since Season 1 stuck pretty closely to Clavell's book. The writers for Season 2 are likely getting creative since there's no second book to guide them. Still, to keep things true to the culture and history, they're working alongside Sanada, who is also a producer.

Aside from Sanada, FX hasn't officially revealed who else will be back for the Shōgun cast, but we can expect more news as production rolls on. The creators believe that Season 2, with all its rich historical elements and practical effects, will require just as much effort as the first season. Given how long it took to shoot Season 1, it seems like Season 2 will also take its sweet time.

What's next for the Shōgun franchise?

The shooting schedule is still up in the air, but now that the screenplays are done, production for Shōgun can move forward. Marks hinted at "future stories," which implies there could be more seasons coming besides the already confirmed Season 3. How FX decides to keep the series going will hinge on the success of Season 2.
