2 months ago | 24 Views
One of the Kannada films that hit theatres on July 26 was Roopanthara, produced by the makers of Raj B Shetty’s debut Ondu Motteya Kathe, which featured the latter’s team on the crew, while he served as writer and actor. The film marked the directorial debut of Mithilesh Edavalath, who picked 5 stories, which could serve as independent tales, that he connected vaguely to make Roopanthara a hyper-linked movie and not an anthology.
Roopanthara headed to Amazon Prime Video
Roopanthara is now headed to OTT, with Amazon Prime Video having picked it up. The film is listed on a bulletin of September releases on the platform, with the release date stated as September 13. However, with Prime Video having ceased to make official announcements about Kannada films, the actual date of release will be confirmed only when it is on the platform. For instance, Family Drama, which was also a July 26 theatrical release, was listed on the same official bulletin as a September 9 release, but is yet to be available for streaming.

The five segments of Roopanthara
Roopanthara begins with a vagabond in a dystopian future, who has to tell a story to save his life. He tells 4 stories, each of varied intensity and effect. It includes one about an elderly couple from a far-off village, who set out to enjoy the sights and sounds of Bengaluru, only to then get some devastating news. A second tale follows a beggar, who is dragged to a police station, after ‘conscientious’ citizens decide that the child she carries around cannot be hers because of their varied physical traits, including complexion.
The third story has Raj as a local thug getting into a minor altercation with a software engineer who passes him by, which then escalates and has an unexpected turn of events. The fourth tale follows a young man, who deals with childhood trauma with substance abuse and self-harm. What happens when he play a game akin to the Blue Whale challenge is what this segment is about. Are these tales enough to save the vagabond's life?
