Rituparna Sengupta takes a brief pause when I inquire about her forthcoming film, Puratawn, directed by Suman Ghosh. The actress is in search of the perfect term to articulate a particular situation and brightens up when she finally finds it—internalizing. As one of Bengal's most accomplished actresses, Sengupta has successfully navigated both mainstream cinema and garnered critical recognition in independent films. In this exclusive conversation with HT, she shared insights about Puratawn, the new Bengali film in which she portrays a woman grappling with her current reality.

Puratawn will connect all generations

When inquired about her decision to accept the role in the film, the actress stated, “Puratawn holds significant meaning for me on multiple levels. This film explores the profound bond between a mother and her daughter, along with various other vital life themes that resonate across all generations. It speaks not only to the elderly but also to the younger generation, who are experiencing loss and navigating their own relationships in a world filled with exposure.”

On dealing with relationships and its mess

The actress found herself contemplating the numerous responsibilities that women must navigate, acknowledging that it is never an easy task. Her role in Puratawn embodies this exploration. She explains, “My character is a principled young woman who has faced significant challenges. She is independent and mature, no longer a teenager, and understands what is effective. Working in the corporate world, she strives to excel as a professional while also fulfilling her roles as a devoted daughter and an exemplary wife. However, this balancing act can become complicated, as she aspires to perfection, which proves to be quite difficult. At times, she succumbs to overwhelming situations, yet she also possesses the strength to rise above them. Puratawn delves into the process of internalizing these emotions and navigating relationships.”

Sengupta acknowledges that she infused much of her own personal experiences and anxieties into the film. She reflects on the demands of her profession and the necessity of adapting to life's flow. “Puratawn addresses the relationships we often overlook, yet there is a wealth of understanding to be gained in that realm. One must follow the path that life presents, as it unfolds in its own manner. This realization resonates with my own experiences; life progresses according to its own rhythm, and one must learn to accept that. Failing to do so can lead to feelings of despair,” she remarks.
