This was nothing like he’d ever done before and a lot was riding on the success of this concert – Elvis’ future depended on this special. And he took himself to the next level with this special, all of which is captured in the upcoming documentary, Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley, which is coming to Netflix on November 13.
The documentary features archival footage and interviews with notable celebrities like rockstar Bruce Springsteen, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, who made the 2022 film Elvis, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, comedian and late night show host Conan O’Brian, Lisa Marie Presley, R& B singer Darlene Love, among others, as they discuss the time in the 60s, when people were looking for meaning in music, that’s deeper than anything they ever heard from Elvis. And it came to a point that Elvis believed that if his career was indeed ending, it would be on his terms.
The 1968 comeback special, was the first step Elvis took in controlling his destiny. This was his one chance at redemption and reclaiming his crown. Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley has been directed by acclaimed documentarian Jason Hehir, best known for the Emmy-winning Michael Jordan documentary miniseries The Last Dance and the much-acclaimed documentary Andre the Giant.
Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic, which has Austin Butler in the role of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is also available to stream on Netflix.
