Consider Hannah Waddingham's portrayal of Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso, who acquired ownership of the English Premier League football club AFC Richmond as part of her divorce settlement. Initially intent on sabotaging the team and undermining its prospects for success, she ultimately transformed into its most significant supporter. In a similar vein, Mindy Kaling appears to have drawn inspiration from Ted Lasso, crafting a distinct narrative featuring Kate Hudson as the leader of a basketball team.

Running Point is the latest series from Kaling, featuring Hudson in the role of Isla Gordon, a character who has been consistently overlooked throughout her life. However, her fortunes change when she is appointed President of her family's basketball franchise, the Los Angeles Waves. This new position compels her to demonstrate her capabilities to a wide array of sceptics, including her team, their supporters, the company's board, the broader sports community, and her own family, thereby affirming her suitability for the role.

All ten episodes of the series are scheduled to premiere on Netflix, with the streaming service announcing February 27 as the official release date. Hudson is joined in the cast of Running Point by Brenda Song (The Last Showgirl), Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Scott Evans, Dane DiLiegro, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Max Greenfield from New Girl, among others.

Ali Lee, Isla's chief of staff and a former college acquaintance, will be portrayed by Song. Lee possesses a keen understanding of the intricate dynamics within Isla's family and knows how to navigate them effectively. She is characterized as both humorous and resilient, making her a figure that even the most formidable members of the team find intimidating—similar to Juno Temple's Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso, perhaps.

Developed by Elaine Ko, with Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen also serving as showrunners, Running Point is set to release a trailer soon.
