Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, was one of the blockbuster films of 2023. The film shattered several box office records. At the same time, the movie opened to polarizing views from both critics and audiences alike. Not only the audience but a few celebrities slammed Animal for misogyny and toxicity. Now, for the first time, Ranbir Kapoor has broken his silence over the severe backlash to Animal.

Ranbir Kapoor on criticism to Animal

In an interview with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, Ranbir Kapoor finally reflected upon the heavy backlash and criticism to his 2023 blockbuster movie, Animal. The actor opined, " Social media played havoc. They needed something to talk about, so they really went to town claiming it was a misogynistic film."

The actor recalled that Sandeep Reddy Vanga had faced similar criticism when he made his first Hindi film, Kabir Singh. While speaking about the same, Kapoor pointed out that the hard work that one puts in gets diminished due to the harsh criticism.

"Because it gets this tag, which isn’t true, the perception stayed with this film. So, the general public will speak very fondly about the film, but there are many people I meet, who tell me, ‘You shouldn’t have done this film, we are so disappointed in you’. And a lot of people from the film industry (said the same thing)," added Ranbir.

Ranbir Kapoor on why Animal was the 'correct film' in his career

Continuing this conversation, Ranbir revealed why he believed Animal was a 'correct film' that he did at the right time in his career to take another step up. The actor stated that he was reaching a saturation point in his career despite being called the 'next superstar' of the industry for a long time. He further mentioned that one can't be called a superstar unless he/she has continuous blockbuster films.

"Because I had been flatlining in the same status, so that was very important for me, for my confidence, to shift from a boy to a man in some way," stated Kapoor.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranbir has films like Brahmastra 2, Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, Love & War, and Animal Park lined up.
