This week marks the release of Zee5's inaugural Kannada original web series, Ayyana Mane, on the platform. The six-episode series is penned and directed by Ramesh Indira, widely recognized for his role as Soma in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, among various other performances. The series will be accessible in its original Kannada language as well as in a newly added Hindi dubbed version. Considering the creators aim to reach a broader audience beyond Karnataka, would it not have been prudent to include a more well-known cast?

Ramesh Indira on his casting choices of Ayyana Mane

Ayyana Mane features a skilled ensemble of actors, including Kushee Ravi, Manasi Sudhir, Anirudh Acharya, Akshay Nayak, Vijay Shobraj Pavoor, Hitha Chandrashekar, Archana Kottige, Kushi Chandrashekar, among others. Ramesh discusses the casting strategy, stating, 'Initially, the intention was to include at least 2-3 recognizable faces to attract a larger audience and enhance the show's marketing potential. However, over the past few years, the platform has heavily invested in content from Tamil and Telugu. Consequently, when they turned their attention to Kannada, the priority shifted to maximizing returns with minimal investment,' explains Ramesh, who previously directed Premier Padmini.

Given the financial and time constraints he faced, Ramesh encountered significant difficulties in assembling a cast for Ayyana Mane. He states, 'Despite these challenges, I reached out to numerous actors to present the script. Some had scheduling conflicts, while others were concerned about compensation. I had to navigate these obstacles to successfully bring the show to fruition. I was determined not to allow the platform to question my ability to execute the project simply due to casting limitations.

' The show received approval in December of the previous year, and the completed product is set to be available for streaming on April 25, which left Ramesh with only a few months to transition from the writing phase to production. He notes, 'The platform exerted considerable pressure to expedite the delivery of episodes, as it needed to be presented at the beginning of the financial year. Had I pursued more well-known actors and awaited their availability, it would have been unfeasible to launch the show in a timely manner.'

Ultimately, it was a joint decision made by the platform and the production company to proceed with the selected cast. 'If the content is truly exceptional, we believed that the audience would overlook the 'faces'. Our primary focus was to guarantee a high-quality execution, and as a result, this cast could potentially gain widespread popularity in the future,' he concluded.
