Filmmaker Ram Madhvani's new web series, The Waking of a Nation, just dropped on SonyLIV and OTTplay Premium on March 7, 2025. Madhvani not only created but also directed this series, which takes a fresh look at the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. It explores history through the lens of the Hunter Commission's investigation. In a recent chat, Ram shared his thoughts on how his show stacks up against Vicky Kaushal's 2021 film, Sardar Udham.

In a chat with Firstpost, Ram Madhvani shared his thoughts on how The Waking of a Nation is being compared to Shoojit Sircar's 2021 movie Sardar Udham. Just to fill you in, the climax of the Amazon Prime Video film features General Dyer and Michael O'Dwyer sharing their stories with the Hunter Commission.

Ram shared his thoughts on the comparisons, saying, "First off, I reached out to Shoojit and Ronnie for their advice and support before we kicked off The Waking of a Nation. I've known Shoojit since our advertising days. We wanted to know where they filmed and what production assistance we might need."

The filmmaker also mentioned that he, along with writers Shantanu Srivastava and Shatrujeet Nath, made a conscious decision not to depict the massacre in the web series. They aimed to handle the incident with respect by leaving it off-screen. "You don’t really know what happened. So, we approached it from the perspective of the survivors. The show honors those who lost their lives, but we chose not to show the massacre," Madhvani explained.

Ram Madhvani's The Waking of a Nation tells the gripping tale of lawyer Kantilal Sahni as he unravels a colonial plot during the British Raj. Taaruk Raina plays the role of Kantilal Sahni in the series. The cast also features Sahil Mehta, Man Singh Karamati, Ananyabrata Chakravorty, Raj Jadon, Dev Raaz, Nikita Dutta, Carl Wharton, and Paul McEwan.
