She shared with the publication, “I just mean that it's not 1937 anymore, and we definitely created a Snow White who won’t be saved by a prince, and she’s not just dreaming about true love.”

She continued, “Instead, she’s focused on becoming the leader she knows she can be, just like her late father encouraged her to be—fearless, fair, brave, and true. It’s a fantastic story for young people to see themselves in.”

Zegler's remarks about the original Snow White went viral when she labeled the classic story as outdated. She referred to the prince as a “guy who literally stalks her,” according to Marca. In another chat with ExtraTV, she reiterated her thoughts on the classic version.

She mentioned, “The original cartoon came out in 1937, and it shows. The focus is heavily on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. It's just weird. So we took a different approach this time. It’s more about her inner journey to discover her true self, and she meets a lot of interesting characters along the way that make the experience amazing.”

However, her comments sparked backlash from fans of the original film, who felt her words were disrespectful to the beloved classic and Disney's legacy. They argued that Zegler's statements overlooked the significant impact the original Snow White had on generations. Fans were particularly upset by her comparison of the prince to a stalker.

Zegler is facing criticism about her ethnicity as Snow White's release nears

Zegler encountered backlash due to her ethnicity after being cast as Snow White. Critics argued that she wasn't suitable for a role traditionally depicted with pale skin, given that she is a Latina actress. In discussing the negative reactions, she mentioned that it escalated to the point where individuals came to her home and shouted insults at her, as reported by Marca.

She stated, “For being brown. For having brown skin. For playing Snow White. There was a lot of harassment from a certain group of people—they were showing up at my apartment and screaming profanities."

Despite the criticism, Zegler remained thrilled about portraying the Disney princess. She highlighted that the new adaptation of Snow White seeks to honor the essence of the original story while making it relatable for younger viewers.

On Good Morning America, she shared, “It was the honor of a lifetime. I think every young person dreams about a phone call like that. This one is certainly extra special as a huge Disney fan." She continued, “To bring her to life in such a unique and special way is a beautiful opportunity, and I feel very honored."
