In 2024, to celebrate Puneeth Rajkumar's birthday, Jackie was brought back to theaters, and Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar teamed up with KRG Studios to announce that his first film, Appu, would also be getting a theatrical re-release. After the positive feedback from Jackie’s return, Karthik Gowda from KRG Studios mentioned that they plan to bring a Puneeth Rajkumar film back to theaters every year, and they’re currently working on digitally remastering Appu.

Celebrating Puneeth's 50th birthday with Appu

Appu is making a comeback to the big screen on March 14, just in time for the celebration of his 50th birthday anniversary. His actual birthday is on March 17. This time around, Ashwini will take care of the film's distribution, which was initially produced and distributed by his late grandmother, Parvathamma Rajkumar, through Vajreshwari Combines.

Puneeth, who started his career as a child actor, took the leap to become a leading man with the film Appu, directed by Puri Jagannadh. This movie also marked the debut of Rakshitha Prem as the female lead. It hit theaters on April 26, 2002, and enjoyed a solid 200-day run. The film was later remade in Telugu (Idiot), Tamil (Dum), and Bengali (Hero).

In this love story, we follow Appu, the main character and the son of a police constable. His dad has big dreams of him becoming an IPS officer, but things take a turn when Appu gets mixed up with some troublemakers and ends up in the hospital. While he's recovering, a girl named Suchi (played by Rakshitha) steps in to help by donating blood and covering his medical expenses, all without him knowing. When Appu finally finds her and starts to pursue her, he discovers that she's actually the daughter of the city’s police commissioner, who strongly disapproves of their relationship. The story revolves around how Appu and Suchi navigate these challenges to be together.

In his almost 20-year career as a leading actor, Puneeth starred in around 30 films, with his final one being James, which came out after his passing. Fans are already pushing Ashwini and director Santhosh Ananddram to re-release Yuvarathnaa in theaters since the film suffered due to pandemic restrictions and went to OTT shortly after. They believe a proper theatrical run would really honor the film.
