L2 Empuraan, the follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, has received some backlash for certain scenes but has still managed to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate was conducting raids at the offices of one of the film's producers, Gokulam Gopalam, while the Income Tax Department was sending notices to another producer, Antony Perumbavoor, and actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Antony Perumbavoor backs Prithviraj Sukumaran

Antony has stepped up to back Prithviraj during the ongoing controversy, especially since the film has raked in over ₹250 crore globally at the box office. He shared two casual photos on his Instagram from an L2 Empuraan event, one where he's chatting with the actor-director, beaming with a big smile, and another where he’s giving Prithviraj a kiss on the cheek.

Sharing the pictures and tagging him, Antony wrote in Malayalam, “Elam okay alle anna?” which, according to Matrubhumi translates to, “All okay brother?” Prithviraj posted it on his Instagram stories, replying, “Pinnalla (yes, indeed or definitely),” with smiley and heart emojis.

L2 Empuraan sets new records despite facing controversy

The off-screen drama surrounding L2 Empuraan doesn't appear to be affecting its box office success. Prithviraj shared on Sunday that the film has raked in more than ₹250 crore globally.

Antony's production house shared the poster with the exciting news: "For the first time ever, Malayalam cinema has crossed the 250 crore mark! The Emperor and his General are exploring uncharted territory! #L2E #Empuraan."

The debate surrounding the movie

L2 Empuraan grabbed attention after its debut on March 27 due to certain scenes that offered a fictional take on the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response to the backlash, the filmmakers quickly edited some scenes and changed the antagonist's name within just a week of the film's release.

The film was back in the headlines when the ED conducted a raid on Gokulam’s office on April 4 and 5, confiscating ₹1.5 crore in cash over alleged violations of foreign exchange laws, as reported by PTI. Additionally, IT notices were issued to Antony and Prithviraj regarding Antony's films Lucifer and Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea, as well as Prithviraj's Jana Gana Mana, Gold, and Kadavu, stemming from a case in 2022.
