Prithviraj Sukumaran, the director of the much-anticipated L2: Empuraan, recently shared his insights during the trailer launch on Thursday. He discussed the current trends in Malayalam cinema, his experiences with the iconic Mohanlal, and his aspirations for the film.

He kicked things off by talking about the positive changes in Malayalam cinema, saying, “The Malayalam industry is thriving. We’re in a golden era right now, producing stunning films, and we have amazing filmmakers and actors delivering fantastic performances. There’s really nothing to complain about in our cinema.”

Prithviraj also touched on the shifting landscape of film distribution, particularly with the rise of pan-India films. He noted, “With cinema now reaching audiences all over the country and terms like ‘pan-India’ becoming popular, theatrical distribution has focused on films that can draw crowds right from day one, treating them as mere entertainment. However, Malayalam cinema isn’t typically known for big-budget, mainstream blockbusters. We have our own unique style of filmmaking that still needs to carve out its niche in the broader distribution and theatrical market across the nation. I’m confident we’ll get there.”

Talking about L2: Empuraan, Prithviraj mentioned, “That said, this film is our way of breaking into that phenomenon. It’s definitely a large-scale, big-budget action entertainer. At least that’s what I aimed to create. Whether I hit the mark, I can’t say for sure. We’re hoping it will push some boundaries and make people think, ‘Hey, the next time a Malayalam film shows up on a small screen in Jharkhand, it might be worth checking out on a weekend.’ We have big dreams down south, and this time, we’ve backed it up with some really solid work.”

He also expressed his admiration for Malayalam cinema legends Mohanlal and Mammootty, highlighting their impact on his generation. “For us, the reason we’re in this industry is largely because of Mohanlal sir and Mammootty sir. We grew up watching them. I tried to walk like Mohanlal sir and talk like Mammootty sir. My dad was an actor from an earlier generation, so when I became aware of how much they influenced me, it was definitely these two.”

Lastly, he praised Mohanlal’s acting approach, saying, “He’s a director’s dream. I often think it would be incredible for my media friends to witness Mohanlal’s process. It really shows what a top-tier actor goes through in their craft.” Empuraan is set to hit theaters worldwide on March 27, 2025.
