Powder on OTT: Diganth-led comedy to drop on THIS platform?

There was a sense of anticipation and excitement around the Kannada film Powder. For starters, KRG Studios was partnering with The Viral Fever for their first collaboration and second, it was being directed by Janardhan Chikkanna, who’d made Gultoo earlier and has also made a film produced by filmmaker Hemanth M Rao called Agnyathavasi, even though the story was not his. He’d still do something with it, or so it was thought.

The film was released in theatres on August 23, after multiple delays (It was initially meant to be in theatres on July 12 and then August 15). In fact, the makers got Rishab Shetty to push his production Laughing Buddha ahead by a week to give Powder a good. But despite this strategy, the film failed to grab the attention of moviegoers. And with Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi going strong at the box office, Powder stood no chance.

The film has already ended its theatrical run and according to the latest buzz it will be on OTT shortly. Powder is expected to drop on Amazon Prime Video shortly. Considering that a successful film like Bheema came to the streamer within a month, Powder should not be far off.

What went wrong with Powder

Billed as a comedy around a misplaced consignment of drugs, the trailer of Powder had Cocaine Bear vibes, albeit, without the bear, and audiences who watched it felt that what failed the film was the lack of good humour. The situations and the dialogues failed to elicit laughs, with the makers focusing more on stylish presentation than a coherent story, it was said.

The film, starring Diganth, Dhanya Ramkumar in the lead, also had Anirudh Acharya, Sharmiela Mandre, Rangayana Raghu, Sampath Maithreya and Nagabhushana on the cast. Powder was about what happens when a bunch of youngsters try to sell a consignment of drugs, with the original parties hot in pursuit.
