Over the years, many actors have successfully transitioned to directing, like Konkona Sen Sharma and Nandita Das in India. This year, Hollywood also saw a big star make the leap, with actor Chris Pine stepping into the director’s chair for Poolman. The film is now set to stream in India via Lionsgate Play. Read on to find out more.
Poolman on OTT
Poolman follows the story of Darren Barrenman, portrayed by Chris Pine, a Los Angeles native who spends his days taking care of the pool at the Tahitian Tiki apartment block while striving to improve his city. When a femme fatale enlists his help to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren teams up with his friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer. His investigation unveils hidden truths about his city and himself.
Directed by Chris Pine, Poolman stars Pine alongside Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, and an ensemble cast. Although the release date has not been confirmed, the film is expected to hit Lionsgate Play in October. Once available, it can also be watched with an OTTplay Premium subscription.
Chris Pine on Directing Poolman
The interesting backstory of Poolman is that Chris Pine conceived the idea during the pandemic while he was confined at home like many of us. After initially struggling to find a writer, Pine decided to take matters into his own hands, writing the film with his partner. This experience gave him clarity on the film’s vision, ultimately leading him to direct it.
In an interview with Moviefone, Pine shared, “I’ve never thought about directing, and the stars aligned because of COVID, really. I had an idea for a pool man named Darren Barrenman that shot around in my brain for two years. Then COVID hit and I was bored and going through a lot of stuff personally. I decided to make it happen, and I tried to hire a writer, but he didn’t really work out, so I decided to write it with my writing partner. Then, as I was writing it, I was thinking about it visually, so then it just felt like what I had to do.”
