Basil Joseph's film Ponman, which premiered in theaters on January 30, 2025, became available on JioHotstar this past Friday. Following its release on the streaming platform, audiences have taken to social media to commend the filmmaker and actor for his outstanding portrayal. Many users have described his role as PP Ajesh in Ponman, directed by Jothish Shankar, as his 'career-best performance,' with some asserting it to be the finest performance of the year.

In a tweet sharing a screenshot from Ponman, one user remarked, “This scene truly highlighted the remarkable talent of actor Basil Joseph. I genuinely wonder if any performer can surpass his performance in #Ponman this year.”  

While praising Basil, several netizens also acknowledged Sajin Gopu and Lijomol Jose for their outstanding performances in the film.

Some observers have pointed out that the film significantly 'underperformed' at the box office. While 'Ponman' received favourable reviews, it failed to reach the success of Asif Ali's Rekhachithram and Kunchacko Boban's Officer on Duty, both of which have become notable hits in Malayalam cinema for 2025.

The storyline of Ponman is derived from the novel "Naalanchu Cheruppakar" by GR Indugopan. One online user remarked that Ponman serves as "a quintessential illustration of transforming a novel into an exceptional screenplay."

The film tells the story of PP Ajesh, a modest gold dealer who provides jewellery to brides for their wedding day. The central conflict emerges when the gold lent for Steffi's wedding is not returned as agreed.
