However, when the jewelry is not returned as agreed, Ajesh embarks on a determined quest to recover it, no matter the obstacles. While the film closely follows Ajesh's courageous struggle to reclaim his gold, it also delicately interweaves a subtle romantic connection between Ajesh and Steffi, which remains largely unexpressed. But do Ajesh and Steffi find happiness together by the end of Ponman? Continue reading to discover the outcome of the film's final scenes, which is inspired by GR Indugopan's novel. (Caution: Spoilers ahead).

Ponman plot

Located in Kollam, the film directed by Jyothish Shankar centers on Steffi and her financially struggling family as they urgently search for gold to secure her wedding, which is dependent on the dowry. When other options fail, they resort to borrowing gold jewelry from PP Ajesh, a minor gold trader. However, the family finds themselves unable to repay the entire sum, prompting Steffi to depart with her husband Mariyano (Sajin Gopu), which forces Ajesh to pursue them.

Ponman ending explained

As Ajesh arrives at his in-laws' residence in search of his gold, Steffi is unwilling to relinquish the jewelry, as it is crucial to her marriage. A bold Steffi acknowledges the immorality of their actions but dares Ajesh to take the gold if he is able.

Following a series of intense events, Mariyano discovers the gold jewelry that was borrowed but refuses to hand it over to Ajesh. In a subsequent confrontation, the robust Mariyano attacks Ajesh with a knife. Upon learning of her husband's violent behavior, Steffi reevaluates her stance and seeks to locate Ajesh's family with the help of her brother. They uncover that Ajesh comes from a humble background, having only a mother and a sister.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Ajesh makes a comeback and once again confronts Mariyano. Steffi subsequently approaches Ajesh to express her apologies. Their interaction reveals a mutual concern for each other's well-being, marking one of the film's most poignant moments.

In the climax, Ajesh boldly challenges Mariyano during the church festival, declaring his intent to reclaim his gold. He also expresses to Steffi his desire to see her before departing from that infamous place. Following a fierce and muddy confrontation, Ajesh successfully overcomes Mariyano and retrieves his gold.

A victorious Ajesh returns to the church, where he discovers Steffi waiting for him. Their playful exchange, laced with sarcasm, reveals the underlying romantic tension between them. Ajesh suggests that he could accompany her if she is heading to Kollam.

In the concluding scenes, Ajesh and Steffi are seen in a boat, during which he remarks that a woman appears more beautiful without her gold (Pon).

While the film does not explicitly depict Ajesh and Steffi becoming a couple, it subtly suggests their deepening feelings for each other, leaving the door open for a potential union in the future.
